Summer of 2009-Part 1

Last time I blogged in November, just after 26/11 attacks. After a brief hiatus and few encouraging words I decided to write again. To start with, few snippets from my thoughts which came to my mind during my extended journey from Mumbai to Patna.
  • I recently read an interview of Robin Sharma. He was asked whether he believed in destiny. An interesting question to ask from a person who talks about shaping destinies. He said, "I believe in destiny but I act everyday like I have a choice- I do what I feel would have the most positive effect on my day to day living and then what happens after, I consider my destiny." I have read his book The monk who sold his Ferrari, but I was more impressed by his answer above than his whole book.
  • In an article that I read in The Telegraph while I was waiting for my train in Howrah, I found an interesting mention about revolutions that have taken place in world history. Almost all of them have been initiated by middle class with less representation from the lower class. Middle class neglects the lower class and its demands but in due course of time lower class revolts in one way or the other-like what has happenned in recent times in Thailand.
  • I am really appalled by the condition of the so called Indian democracy where 50% people vote and candidate getting 30% of those polled votes is elected. Effectively he is getting 15% of total votes only and he is in minority but he ends up REPRESENTING us. Imagine the state of this representation in states like J&K and some north east states where polling percentage generally is less than 40%. Alternate ways of increasing public participation by innovative ways like online voting, distance voting through mails, etc need to be introduced.
  • Another drama is going on these days-The IPL2.....a blend of cricket and entertainment with heavy bias towards entertainment than cricket. A small but brilliant idea of 10 minutes time out(Strategic time out to be specific) is expected to earn close to Rs106 crore.
  • I do not remember when I had seen a tennis match last time.My memories of great tennis race back to Sampras days and I strongly think that Federer came close to him but Sampras is the numero uno as he faced greater competitors like Agassi,Becker,Courier whereas Federer faced players of mediocre calibre except Nadal. Had Federer won a French Open( chances of this happenning is as remote as Indian football team winning a World Cup), I would have placed him above my all time favourite-Pete Sampras!!!
  • I reached Patna station at 23:00 hours and I took a rickshaw( a hand pulled one) which is always my preference when I reach home because the 30 minutes journey from station to home gives a fair indicator of state of affairs. Pleasantly surprised by beaming street lights, vendors selling ice cream so late in the night, families out of their homes, I felt that things are changing back home.Readers who have never been to a state which is closer to 3rd world countries of Africa( I put BIMARU states ,Orissa,West Bengal in the category-people can differ on this) might not be able to appreciate the pleasure one can get when he sees the MOST OBVIOUS of things as per their standards.
Perceptions are the most important initiators of actual change.Until the perception changes, nothing can change. This is true for most of the things ranging from recession, stock markets to state of affairs in a state.
I can see perceptions changing, actual change is definitley around the corner!!!!!!
